Thanks Kylie! i'm sure you understand our pain! I forgot to mention that before we released the round one motions, we put up a 'joke' list of topics - just for a minute - to see if people would believe it, and they did! people were writing them down and muttering to each other about how insanely hard this tournament was going to be the theme of the round (meant to hint at the fact at the fact that it was a joke) was "The International Herald Tribune" the topics were: "that official development aid should be conditional on the ratification of the Basel II Accord" "that the EU should adopt the 'square root' method of determining voting rights "that we should all extraction of precious metals for purely ornamental purposes" i actually think that last one would have been a good debate, but the others are obvious too obscure to be fair. everybody laughed though when we revealed that it was a joke, i think it was more relief that humour

oh tim... you must have one of the nerdiest senses of humour around! ... oh and tough luck with the tab, hope its all sorted... all i can say is big ups to the monash crew, esp the mighty 6s! For all you old(er) hacks than me out there, if the kids get through will it be the first time we've broken a M6? I remember that team gorgeous from UTS was M5, but can't think we've been deeper than that! mush ps - still no news from lauren re melb teams, tho im sure that not many ppl on this board actually care

Update Round 6:
M2 beat UQ1 and are now 5-1.
M4 lost to UQ3 and are 4-2.
I don't know the results for any other teams (despite my best attempts) - if anyone else does then post away.
Rounds 7 and 8 are silent. it is accepted that 6 wins will get you in the break, with 108 teams in the tournament (over 20 more than last year).

quick update
Melb 1 and 2 won their last debate. Melb 2 need to win both the remaining debates to break, but their confidence is high. The mood in the MAD contingent is high.
Monash 1 beat Ateneo 1 in a controversial 2-1 split (Ateneo were pulled up into that bracket). Needless to say, Ateneo 1 are not happy campers at the moment.
two more rounds of do-or-die action to go!
the topics were:
Theme: Security in the Asia Pacific 1) That Sri Lanka should grant statehood to the Tamils 2) That Australia should recruit soliders from Pacific Island States 3) That we should lift trade sanctions on North Korea if it shuts and seals it nuclear facilities.
Monash 1 faces Vic 1 this round.
gotta go! round starts in about 30 minutes

Thanks for the updates Tim, Stagg and Mush (and yes, even if no one else cares about the Melbourne results, I do).
Awesome to hear the teams going so well - they are great results for M1 and M2 in the last round!.
Good luck to all the Victorians for the silent rounds - I'm sure a few of us will be staying up till the early hours waiting for the break announcement later tonight

hey all... lauren says melb 1 are on 4-2 as well, so need to finish off with two wins to break...
tim, seeing as some of us will be up pretty late tonight, any way to let us know if there will be massive delays due to a late finish post round 8?

I don't want to cause a fuss, but isn't it a bit ridiculous for Malaysia to have a whole round? I know I'm going attacked for saying this by the PC brigade, but if the reverse happened there'd be no end to the attacks on whichever Australian or British region did it...

There was a Canada round at UBC Worlds, and there was no dissent or concern.
Thanks to the lurker who pointer out that we didn't invent the concept of the 'joke round'. believe it or not, it wasn't invented in 2004 either!
Theme for the last round was: The greatest market failure in history
1) that we should use biofuels as the solution to peak oil 2) that the developed world should institute a policy of zero population growth 3) that we should abandon the Kyoto Protocol in favour of the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (AP6)
as for delays, we're just about to print the draw and allocate adjudicators, so i gotta run.

8 wins: monash 1
7 wins: monash 2 vic 2
6 wins: vic 1 atteneo 1 sydney 2 atteneo 2 UQ1 UTS2 NTU2 melbourne 2 melbourne 1 sydney 3 UQ 3 UQ 2 NUS 2
Amazing. I really don't have words.
Monash 1 and Monash 2, all six of you are amazing. This is an incredible achievement for such young debaters.
Monash 3-6, its obvious you guys have had some great results, and at a smaller Australs I'm sure some of you would have made the break.
Bring on the bid, and bring on the finals! Can't wait to see everybody when they get back.

After being woken up about 15 times throughout the night, I'm pretty tired. Truly a phenomenal effort by Monash 1 / 2 - I wish I could have been there! Was talking to Tim and he said that the crowd went ballistic for Monash 1 and then ballistic x 10 for Monash 2!
Congrats to everyone! Apparently Monash 4 got a bit stiff with the draw so bad luck to them in particular.
Congratulations to Melb 1 and Melb 2! A great achievement, they both came from a long way back on the last day so congratulations to them!
Tim also told me the topics for Round 8. My mind is a bit hazy now but they were something like this:
Round 8: MIDDLE EAST That the West Bank should become part of Jordan That the West should overtly support pro-democracy movements in the Middle East That the United States should only use soft power to achieve its aims in the Middle East
(wording is most likely wrong for all of those - but you get the drift.)
Go Monash! Let's finally see that Monash-Monash GF we have been after for so long!

Wow! That's an amazing effort by both M1 and M2 - Congratulations!. My memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I can't recall the top two teams in the break at Australs coming from the same institution in the last few years.
Bad luck to M3-6. I'm sure you're all having a blast and will come back to Australs bigger and better in the future (hopefully on home turf next year!). Good to hear that the Monash tradition of loud crazy support for finalists should continue in the next couple of days.
Well done to Melb 1 and 2 as well - thats a great effort on the last day. If the order of the break is as posted by Tom, then I think that the four Victorian teams are all in different quarters of the draw, so if we all want a Monash-Monash GF, can I add two Monash-Melb semis to the wishlist

Just a quick update.
the break Tom posted is accurate
the topics Staggy posted were pretty accurate (the last motion was "that 'soft power' is the only way America can achieve its goal of democratization in the Middle East"
the bids will be presented at 2.30 local time (4.30 in Oz) so fingers crossed.
i think we have made up a huge amount of ground over the last few days, and i think that if we do lose it wont be by much. but there are some real unknowns. there are a huge number of Malaysia unis who appear to be pretty much split down the middle, but many of them are saying that they won't bother paying the AIDA membership fees to grant them voting rights because they probably couldn't attend either tournament. so depending on the 'voter turnout' the result could well swing wildly in either direction.
but its very heartening when people come up and say that they are from a university that has been in the Asia Tour, or otherwise been coached by MADdies and that on the strength of that experience they are voting for us. its a real testament to work that so many MADdies have out in over the years building those connections and our reputation.
so if we win, we can honestly say that a huge number of MADdies, current and past, have contributed to the result
