While I am a facebook member, I very much understand the reluctance to join, and so I've copied Georgia's photos to the MAD website - www.monashdebaters.com/members_stuff/photos/2006/edmonton/index.html(Yeah, I know, I've "retired" from editing the website... well, Warney's retired but he's still playing next week, and for Hampshire for the next 2 years.) Any Worldsians wanting to post photos for everyone send them to my email (it's gmail, who cares about how large the attachment is) and I'll get them up as quick as I can. Meanwhile, I'm now holding $70 worth of bets. You mob better all pay up if you lose. English, you have already picked up Liz and you can't bet on yourself and I don't have $1000 to give you. Nice try though.

Dang, no fair! I could have used a $1000... but never mind, I like the consolation prize! The first day of the tournament was a highly successful one for MAD... Monash D, Georgia and Jeffery, are building up momentum up to Worlds and gaining confidence, sitting on 5 points from 3 debates and impressing the adjudicators. Monash A, Tom and Jake, are travelling well, gaining some good experience and currently leading the 16-team tab on 8 points from 3 debates. Monash C, K (for now - Kiran arriving during the afternoon) debating with a friendly, lovely local, Julia, have surprised in the tournament, finishing the day on 7 points. The big news is that in a debate on U2, K's team took a point of Monash A! Those odds of K and Kiran now breaking at Worlds now seem a little attractive... On the ajudicator front, Steve started off chairing rooms, with Victor joining him after the first round, chairing the last two rounds. English is gaining experience of IV-ajudicating and getting used to the different scoring system of Worlds. Onto the more important socials front, and as usual MAD leads the way. Partying hard in the rooms til 3.30am yesterday, the whole contingent are backing up the next night with the party still going strong behind me! The jacuzzi is seeing plenty of action, with Tom and Jake currently undertaking some Monash A bonding excercises. Apparently, there's room for a third... any takers!? The Brownlow is still taking place, and the votes broke down as follows... the doughnut went to English, who went to a social event - a room party at the CA, Stef's, place and promptly fell asleep. (ed. <i>at least I GOT to the function... Kiran called it a night just before 10.30! </i> The other votes broke down as follows... K - 3 votes - for a great win, great flirting with everyone all day (i.e. Stef & Julia!), and for falling asleep in a foetal position, in the middle of the room party Victor - 2 votes - for being (VERY) in touch with his sexual self Kiran - 1 vote - for losing his luggage Therefore, the leaderboard, after three rounds is: K - 6 votes Victor - 4 votes English - 3 votes Georgia - 2 votes Tom, Jeffery, Kiran - 1 vote each Finally, some honoury votes must be given to some of the locals here... Monica, for falling down... twice. and Stef, CA, and for hosting a fantastic party at her place, the perfect hostess- free booze, always on hand with re-fills, ensuring that no one person ever ran dry... That just about wraps up the first day of debating here, and we are looking forward tomorrow to the final two rounds of debating before the grand final. Oh, and we have it on record that K will/wants to take more points of Tom and Jake... the challenge has been laid down! Photos will be uploaded... soon. When we get the chance. Apart from that, this is the Monash contingent from Edmonton sending their love back home... ~English. And the rest of the MAD contingent.

I would like to say three quick things...
1) I throughly disapprove of talking up Monash B... I have strong feeling on jinxing people, but even stronger feelings on fleecing julian, both of which are not aided by talk from kylie and staggy...
2) This stupid monash brownlow thing intrsinsically disadvantages the majority of the black ppl in the contingent (shameless plug for sashi...you owe me)
3) If teh MAD goal is what i think it is, there are people with hell of a lot of faith... and i for one will try not to dissappoint!

Thanks for the updates from Edmonton guys, they're great to read, keep them coming!
Funny how K and Victor are leading the Brownlow, amazed Jake hasn't got a vote yet, has he been passing out too early each night before he can do anything vote-worthy? And what on earth are Victor's votes actually referring to?

Hey guys, your humble English correspondant reporting in again at the end of an <b>AMAZING</b> pre-worlds tournament.
Straight on to the debating, and the final two rounds were highly competitive. Firstly, the motions from the first day of debating, for those that are interested, are as follows:
Round 1: TTHW confine pregnant women to protect their fetuses from substance abuse.
Round 2: THBT Japan should acquire nuclear weapons
Round 3: THBT U2 should disavow Bono's political activism
The second day began with all three Monash teams with a chance of breaking. Unfortunately, they were not able to build sufficiently on their starts to make a very competitive break, but Monash A progressed with 13 points at the top of the tab.
The final motions of the preliminary rounds were:
Round 4: TTHW abolish agricultural supply management schemes
Round 5: TTHW purchase opium from Afghani farmers.
Travelling to the fairly opulent Alberta Legislature building for the final, we were informed of the break and learned that Monash A had broken, and that Steve and Victor had made the ajudication panel.
The motion for the final was: "THW require nations to grant soverignity to minority groups on the basis of national self-determination"
In a fairly competitve debate, Monash A pulled through to take out the tournament, including first and second speaker places - Tom best speaker; Jake second-best speaker.
So all-in-all, a fantastic warm-up tournament for Monash. The socials in particular were amazing, and many friends were made. Tonight we had the end-of-tournament dinner at Fort Edmonton Park (a quaint historical park, dating back to the 1800's), including sleigh rides and snowball fights!
The contingent will be heading off to Jasper in the morning for a couple of nights, which everyone is looking forward to, so updates may be a little slow in coming until we get into Vancouver on Boxing Day.
...and now Tom is going to drown himself after listening to this post being read out by Georgia...
With love, A very tired, very content MAD contingent

Yeah, yeah, so Tom and Jake won, congrats and stuff, but what about the important contest - Did Victor or English manage to run down Sammy K in the Brownlow??
Well done guys, good to see another win for us. With wins at ADAM, Australs, Melbourne Mini and Edmonton, Tom and Jake have won 4 separate tournaments in one year for the club, an absolutely astonishing effort - on top of the President's Cup win, and our grand final placings at Women's and Sydney Mini, it's been a very special year to be a MADdie, no matter what happens in Vancouver.

Well...
Nah, Jake deserved the three votes. I was there as he posted, so its all good...
Christmas Eve (24th) votes:
English - 3 votes - Losing his wallet, winning the slurpee challange (to drink a slurpee in a tee shirt, in minus 15 degrees weather at night), and winning a marathon 4hour poker game against Kiran. For $10. Kiran - 2 votes - (was to go to K, but due to shameless self-promotion got relegated to 1) Kiran got two for losing the poker game K - 1 vote - Losing poker game (first out), losing his own slurpee challange, and singing & dancing australian songs at 3am, and an interesting affection for presidents past and present.
Tom - doughnut - sleeping throughout the day missing wildlife tour and other fun-filled activities
We've just finished an awesome Korean christmas lunch and are just about to catch the train to Vancouver.

I'm feeling very guilty on behalf of the rest of my contingent as to how long its been since we posted on the forum.
No updates on votes yet, as key members of the voting committee will have to be sobered up before they can give their input.
In any case, we are now officially at ground zero as we have arrived in Vancouver this morning after an epic 17 hour train ride from Jasper, which is possibly the most beautiful town in the world. The train was pretty extraordinary, with the nine of us commandeering the viewing car on top of the train once it had gotten dark and effectively turning it into a karaoke bar. After croaking out a rasping version of 'American Pie' some of us retired to the dining car (how cool does that sound) while the rest of us went to sleep.
Vancouver is a lovely city, but a brief glimpse of sunlight would be nice. The hostel is cheap, comfortable and full of debaters, and increasingly its becoming full of drunk debaters. Tomorrow, we check into the Sheraton and start to catch up with the rest of the debating world.
I hope you all had a Happy Christmas. Will post more updates when I can.
