Hi Folks,
Well after last night's exciting Internal Comp GF on 'energy independance' (great topic by the way ;D) i've been thinking about different energy issues.
Energy independance is a good issue - along with all the sub-sets of that debate like nuclear power, and another good energy topic is resource nationalism (countries like Russia seizing control of previously privately/foriegn owned resource companies and turning them into state-owned companies). This has been a pretty common topic in the last 3 or 4 years in part because its a really interesting debate.
I don't have the time at the moment to post a lot of info about all of these issues, but for those who are interested i recommend the current edition of a magazine called 'Mother Jones', which this month has a special focus on energy and there are lots of interesting articles. MJ is quite expensive ($16) but you can read it for free through your uni library e-journal system (or you can borrow mine).
Check out this article for example.
www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2008/05/put-a-tyrant-in-your-tank.html
It deals with the issue of resource nationalism and makes some interesting, and somewhat counter-intuitive arguements in favour of privately owned oil multinationals (usually a difficult group to defend!). One thing i love about the MJ website is the readers blog below each article, the discussions/debates can be fascinating but usually hilarious is a better description.
Enjoy
