Excluding the rather dull excuses for debate in election campaigns, I thought that it would be useful to list the examples of televised debates.
[1] In 1992/93 there were student debates broadcast at 7 am on channel 10. They were year 11/12 students and, to my understansing, this was not official competition since the results do not coincide with those of 92/93. The standard was debating was fantastic. The first year [92] the debates were in Canberra and the final was between someone and Victoria. The Victorian team had 3 giirls [it was traditionla 3 on 3 debating with no POI etc] and they won on the negative of "We need the royal family".
Then in 93 I think that it was WA[?] who won the event in Melbourne and the final was the topic" we need to be more like Japan". The losing affirmative team was Tasmania.
In both years there were a number of debates ahown that w ent for about a month. Adjudications were given after each one and they were proper adjudicators. For Instance Chris Erskine was the chief adjudicator in the finals.
To my knowledge this is the only attempt on Australian free to air TV to presnet debating over a period of time. The debates stopped after this pt.
[2] In 1994[?] the world uni debates were in Melbourne. I recorded the final which was on live at 7:30 pm of "machiavelli is the way to go".
I do not have any of these tapes anymore. I gave them to a school to help any other debaters and I made no copies.
