I wasnt really sure where to put this, so I figured I'd start a new thread. I'm sure many of you have been following the case in Afghanistan, where a man by the name of Abdul Rahman faces the death penalty for having converted to Christianity. Bear in mind, his conversion occurred 16 years ago in (ironically) Pakistan, when he was working for an aid organisation. It's an interesting issue in that it highlights some of the difficulties the local government is having, both in regards to whether western concepts of law should be embraced, or maintain Islamic law. I guess one of the main worries is that if Islamic law is allowed to prevail, women might start getting stoned (like the woman in Somalia). links to the issue: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4832872.stmwww.iht.com/articles/2006/03/23/news/afghan.php

The Oz is choc full of good debating stuff today! (I go through moods with the Austalian, even though its pretty hard-right, it generally has a decent world section, but sometimes it just goes too far and i have to put it down). But check this out: theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21059653-2702,00.html anyone need a good church/state topic for Freshers or Easters? Look no further!

Speaking of church and state debates (I know we technically weren't "speaking" about it, but the novice grand final last night was a secularism debate so thats what i'm refering too), this is a really interesting issue, and one to watch in the run-up to Australs www.abc.net.au/ra/programguide/stories/200805/s2247634.htm
