For those you who read my article advocating a guest worker program for Australia, you might be interested to see this www.abc.net.au/ra/pacbeat/stories/s1465373.htmIf you haven't read my article, then i hope you die and burn in hell.

Heard a report on it this morning on AM, unfortunately it seems to fit far too easily into the "foreigners pinching Aussie jobs" category of stories when played through the media.
Above all else, if this starts getting more regular media coverage, maybe some different reporting might eventuate, however perhaps other unis might also pick up on this idea for a model too, so I guess there's positives and negatives to it.
Back to study now,
Julian.

thanks for posting that Julian, i just had a listen. I don't often find myself agreeing with the NFF, in fact this may well be the first time EVER, but in this instance they are right and the Unions are simply wrong (you know when the ACTU and the Howard government have the same view that its got to be wrong).
I love this quote: Meantime, the Australian Workers Union says it's opposed to the plan, arguing that importing workers for the short-term isn't the answer to the labour crisis.
thats very clever, except that guest workers aren't MEANT to be the answer, its got more to do with providing more effective aid, as well providing skills training for pac-rim populations, while at the same time filling the growing list of vaccancies while we try and find more permanent solutions to the skills crisis.
The simple reality is that in terms of agricultural labour, i don't think that there really is a domestically based, long term solution. Australian's don't want to work on farms anymore, its time we accepted that. Thats what happens when you give people education and mobility, they aim for higher pay, professional work. No magic bullet of TAFE and tax cuts is going to reverse that trend in any significant way. So we either close all the farms (i can live with that. farmers piss me off) or we let deperately poor people do the work for a fair wage. Its a real 'no-brainer' to me.

well it seems this issue is just warming up, here is the (positive) response to the NFF's plan by the government of Fiji. www.abc.net.au/ra/pacbeat/stories/s1469343.htmwhats strange about all this is that Labor's Spokesperson for the Pacific Islands, Bob 'about to be crushed by Shorten' Sercombe, was making all the right noises about a guest worker program, quite some time ago (as in months ago) but now that the issue has some oxygen he's gone silent. God damned federeal ALP, they just never seem to get their act together!

hazzah! my faith in the federal ALP has been partially restored! It would appear that i have spoken too soon. The ALP is in favour of a guest worker program, and they are also in favour of the Pacific Islands creating an EU-style political structures, with a parliament and court AND AND AND the adoption of the Aussie dollar as the Pacific currency - now there's a model for a debate!!! www.abc.net.au/ra/pacbeat/stories/s1471160.htm

So do we, or do we not, have a guest worker scheme? While Johnny denies it, it seems that it effectively exists! www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=4111For a nervous laugh at the dangerous stupidity of people in the bush, check out the comment by Realist afterwards. I looked up the dimia website and found the visa application they're talking about - it's an 18 page form, not the best if the poor worker can barely understand English! Critically, it allows workers to stay for up to 4 years, far longer than Tim's proposal in his matter article of 3-6 months. www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1066.pdfBTW, nice call Tim. For Tim's guest worker article, go to www.monashdebaters.com/matter_files/guestworkers.html

maybe you should call Sercombe's office (while he still has one) and ask him to clarify the status-quo. i'd be interested to hear the answer because i think its confusing too.

After the topic about Pacific Islands federating (great topic by the way Kylie et al) you should all be much more interested in this part of the world that gets very little attention generally in debating. Heres the latest on moves to better link together the economies and labour forces of the Pacific Island states (including Australia and NZ) www.abc.net.au/correspondents/content/2006/s1694008.htm

Following Ravi's lead of reviving old favourites, i wanted to put guest-worker/labour mobility back on the agenda. The ABC follow this issue much more closely than other mainstream media, so this recent Foreign Correspondant story on New Zealand's new pacific islander guest worker scheme. Well worth 20 minutes to watch the clip www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2008/s2211883.htm
