I think that the most important thing in this discussion, is the that of new DAV policy.
I can see a problem with the status quo, and i think we have a solution.
Problem: my PLC girls didn't win A-Grade, solution: Retrospective-bias-adjudications.
That is a policy worth discussing. let the forums be alight with inspiration!

I didn't really know where to post this, so i've decided to try and convert this dormant thread into a 'people who suck' thread - so we can bag out people who are lame. This time its the junior senator from hell, Hillary Clinton. This is a paragraph from a story that ran in the Age on saturday... She infuriated many on her side when she gave a joint news conference with what Andersen describes as "her two most appalling Christian-right colleagues", Rick Santorum and Sam Brownback, to call for $90 million in federal funds to investigate their contention that the internet and other electronic media are "satanic". But then amusingly there was this paragraph Clinton is also criticised for her seeming shift to the centre on abortion rights, for her loony belief that video games such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have secret sex scenes in them and for her recent flag protection law that, says Andersen, will make flag burning and inciting riots "even more illegal than they already are". Firstly there are 'secret' sex scenes in GTA - they're ridiculous (i mean they're basically cartoon characters having pixelated, fully clothed, sex...) and there are worse scenes in GTA that aren't secret - like the fact that if you're short on cash you can have sex with a prostitute in a stolen car, and then beat her to death with a baseball bat and steal her money - but its the secret sex scenes that upset hillary... Secondly i just like the phrase "even more illegal"... thats awesome! If you're interested, you can read the rest of the article here: www.theage.com.au/articles/2006/01/13/1137118964522.htmlanyone else pissed off about someone at the moment?

Heres a quick addition to the 'lame people' list.
Today's 'Vox Pop' in the Herald Scum asked the question "Do you approve of teachers and students from 2 government schools joining in a gay pride march?"
Joan Nightingale from Hughesdale (yes i'm aware that sort of rhymes) said "Yes. I mean i know some gay people and they're quite nice, so i don't see a problem with it".
You hear that Roland/Big Gay Al/Staggy? - you only have the right to freedom of association because you're nice to old people. If Joan's homosexual acquiantences had been arseholes, she'd presumably have a total different view of democracy...
It is worth pointing out though that of the 5 people asked for their opinion, all approved (for various reasons, some of which, like Joan were stupid - but they still approved) so there is hope yet

The thing I love about the first article TS posted was it used the word "id", a word I've only ever seen used on the instructions of scrabble! I have to admit, while once upon a time I did look it up in the dictionary, I have absolutely no idea what it means now.

oh damn, i wanted to be the one who posted Vale's lunatic comments... i got a transcript of the comments she made on the 7.30 Report last night, and here they are... DANNA VALE: I've actually read in the Daily Telegraph where a certain Imam from the Lakemba mosque actually said Australia's will be a Muslim nation in 50 years time. I didn't believe him at time, but when you actually look at time the birth rates and look at the fact that we are aborting ourselves almost out of existence by 100,000 abortions every year - and that's on a guesstimate - you multiply that by 50 years, that's five million potential Australians we won't have.
JACKIE KELLY: I think Danna is on her own on that one. [laughs]

This is what happens when a country becomes apathetic and people say "politics doesn't interest me", and even the smart, interested people don't join political parties and so don't influence who stands for election.
Vale is obviously a total, total lunatic, but she must have won a preselection ballot amongst rank and file members of her own party. While i'm not necessarily suggesting you should all run out and join the Libs or Nats, if you're not a member of the political party that most closely represents your views, then complaining about the quality of candidates is a bit rich (that isn't a shot at you Staggy, its just something i've been thinking a lot about recently - why more debaters aren't actively involved in politics - and it increasingly upsets me)
The only thing worse that 'aborting ourselves out of existance' is another term for this fucking stupid, nasty, federal government. I'd rather we become a Saudi-style Muslim nation

I think Dana Vale has a fight on her hands for 'idiot of the week' check out this grab from the IHT today: Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister of Italy, wanted to set the record straight: He was "joking" when he compared himself to Napoleon. "I am the Jesus Christ of politics," he corrected himself a day later in a speech on Saturday. "I am a patient victim. I bear everything. I sacrifice myself for everyone." This came the same day that Berlusconi put himself in Churchill's league and not long after he made a vow to a priest not to have sex until the end of his already strenuous exertions to be re-elected in April. www.iht.com/articles/2006/02/14/news/lira.php

I remember at Singapore Worlds one of the Alberta teams told me that having Tim as a judge was like being 'adjudicated by Jesus'.
I guess that makes Tim the Silvio Berlusconi of debating. Or something.
